What to consider before you immigrate

If you have are considering immigrating to Canada, New Zealand, Australia or the UK there are a couple of very important things to consider before making any final decisions. This article discusses some of the consideration factors for skilled workers and professionals who want to immigrate to Canada. If you want to immigrate to Canada there are different ways to apply and you will need to consider which program is best for you and your family.

Skilled workers and professionals

This program is designed for people who want to settle and work in Canada. Skilled workers are selected as permanent residents based on their education, work experience and knowledge of English and/or French. However it is not applicable to the province of Quebec as it has its own selection criteria for skilled workers.

Who can apply ?

Applications are reviewed in the three steps.

  • Based on the Minister’s instructions your applications will be eligible for consideration if:
  • If you have an offer of arranged employment or;
  • You are a foreign national and have been living legally in Canada as a foreign national worker or international student; or
  • You are a skilled worker who has at least one year’s experience in the listed occupations.

2. If your application is eligible for processing you should also meet the minimum requirements in order to qualify as a skilled worker:

  • One year of full-time, paid work experience or the equivalent of part-time, continues employment.
  • Your work experience should be Skill O which is Managerial Occupations, Skill Level A which is Professional Occupations or Skill Level B which is Technical Occupations and Skilled Trades on Canada’s National Occupation Classification list.
  • You must have had this experience within the past 10 years.

3. If you meet the minimum requirements your application will be processed based on six selection factors:

  • Your education.
  • Your work experience.
  • Your age.
  • Your adaptability.
  • Your ability in Canada’s two official languages: English and French.
  • Whether you have arranged employment.

Above all of these requirements to be eligible for applying for Canada immigration you should also show that you are able to support you and your dependants after arriving in Canada.
