There are seven large universities in New Zealand. Some have campuses in more than one city and many offer some courses by distance learning. Each university offers some specialist subjects as well as the general areas of learning.

Auckland University of Technology

The Auckland University of Technology was founded in 1895. There are two campuses (Wellesley in the Auckland CBD and Akoranga in the North Shore).

The main faculties are:

  • Tourism
  • Engineering
  • Communications
  • Hotel Management

The University of Waikato (Visit Waikato University web)

The University of Waikato was established in 1964 and it is located in Hamilton and Tauranga.

There are 7 faculties:

  • Arts and Social Sciences

  • Computing and Mathematical Science
  • Law
  • Maori and Pacific Development

The Massey University is the largest university in New Zealand and it has campuses in Palmerston North, Wellington and Auckland. The university consists of five colleges:

  • College of Business
  • College of Creative Arts
  • College of Education
  • College of Humanities and Social Sciences
  • College of Sciences

The University of Canterbury (Visit Canterbury University web)

The University of Canterbury is New Zealand’s second-oldest University and it is located in Christchurch. The main faculties are:

  • Arts
  • Business and Economics
  • Engineering
  • Science
  • Education
  • Law

The University of Otago (Visit Otago University web)

The University of Otago is the largest university in New Zealand with a main campus (Dunedin) and smaller facilities in Auckland and Wellington. The main faculties are:

  • Dentistry

  • Medical Laboratory Science
  • Medicine
  • Pharmacy
  • Physical Education
  • Physiotherapy
  • Surveying
  • Theology  

Lincoln University (Visit Lincoln University web)

Lincoln University (near Churchchrist) was formed in 1990 when Lincoln College, Canterbury was made independent of the University of Canterbury. The main academic units are:

  • Agriculture and Life Sciences Division
  • Bio-Protection and Ecology Division
  • Commerce Division
  • Environment, Society and Design Division

University of Auckland

The University of Auckland was established in 1883 as a constituent college of the University of New Zealand. There are over six campuses that offer a wide range of programmes and you can also do many conjoint combination courses (which allows you to achieve multiple degrees in a shortened period of time). The main faculties are:

  • Arts
  • Business and Economics
  • National Institute of Creative Arts and Industries
  • Education
  • Engineering
  • University of Auckland Law School
  • Medical and Health Sciences

  • School of Theology
