Canada welcomes newcomers, and is presently engaged in a vigorous immigration program to attract highly skilled individuals to Canada. It is estimated that Canada needs more than one million skilled professionals over the next three years to fill employment requirements.

There are a number of options open to prospective newcomers, whether they are contemplating going as a skilled worker or a business person.

  • Skilled Worker Category: Skilled workers are those who will be granted permanent residence based on their ability to become economically established in Canada. To be eligible applicants will have to meet certain minimum requirements and also pass a points test. The current points requirement is 67 points.

    During 2008 the Canadian authorities introduced the C-50 Immigration Bill which defines eligibility for permanent residence as follows:

    • Having an offer of arranged employment (AEO) OR;
    • Being a foreign national living legally in Canada for at least 1 year as a temporary foreign worker or an international student OR;

    Being a skilled worker who has at least 1 year of experience in an occupation as defined in the revised Priority Occupations List (POL)

  • Business Immigration: Business individuals and investors are very welcome in an economy as strong as Canada’s, and provided that you have business or investor experience and meet certain requirements you will be able to apply for permanent residence.

  • Provincial Nomination: Through your qualifications and work experience you may be eligible for a program run by the various provinces, which encourage immigrants to settle in those provinces and benefit their economies.

  • Family Class Immigration: This category reunites families in Canadian homes, subject to compliance of certain conditions.

  • Temporary Work Permits: Due to the lengthy processing time for permanent residence under the Skilled Worker category, many people embark on a proactive job search program, which could lead to obtaining employment and entering Canada on a Temporary Permit in approximately 6/8 months.

  • Canadian Refugee System: Canada offers safe haven to persons with a well-founded fear of persecution, as well as those at risk of torture or cruel and unusual treatment or punishment. Canada has signed the United Nations 1951 Geneva Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and it’s 1967 Protocol.
