Immigrating to New Zealand

New Zealand has identified specific employment opportunities as necessary for its growth as a nation. They are looking for skilled individuals, with the right qualifications and experience and importantly relevant employment offers, to apply through a multi-phased application process for residence in New Zealand.
New Zealand introduced a new immigration program in December 2003 which effectively controls the influx of foreign skilled workers, to avoid what is termed as the “doctors driving taxis” syndrome.
Besides the Skilled Migrant category there are other options available to aspirant immigrants, among which is a business visa for entrepreneurs wishing to start or purchase a business in New Zealand.
- Skilled Migrant category: To obtain residence in New Zealand individuals must first file and expression of interest (EOI) and pass a points test. Having a job in New Zealand will contribute greatly to points. The application is placed in a “pool” and if all of the necessary criteria regarding qualifications, work experience and other factors are met, an invitation is extended to the applicant to apply for residence in New Zealand. months.
- Work to Residence category: A visa that allows temporary entry to New Zealand to take up a job, and allows the holder to convert to permanent residence after two years of employment, and having met certain prescribed conditions, particularly remuneration and job category.
- Temporary Work Permit: Available for a variety of work related situations in New Zealand such as short-term employment, working holidays, or temporary positions with the intention to settle later on.
- Business Visa: New Zealand offers a route to residence via the Long Term Business Visa (LTBV), where the applicant must display adequate knowledge and experience in running a business, and submit a business plan for their intended enterprise for evaluation and approval.
